Charlottesville voters receive new cards

All registered Charlottesville voters can expect to receive new voter cards within the next two weeks. The change stems from the recent state redistricting, which occurs every 10 years in response to census data.

Although only a portion of Charlottesville voters' districts have changed, Charlottesville General Registrar Sheri Iachetta said the Office of Voter Registration is mailing new cards to all voters.

"We sent a new voter card that should be hitting everybody's mailboxes sometime this week, or next week," Iachetta said. "We wanted to send cards out to everyone so that there would be less confusion as to who receives them or who doesn't get them."

Although all students registered to vote in Charlottesville will have new cards sent to their registered addresses, most will remain unaffected by the redistricting process, Iachetta said. Some student voters may be assigned to new polling locations.

"The ones that live off of Jefferson Park Avenue may go to the Buford Boys and Girls Club or they will either go to Johnson School, but most students will continue to vote in Alumni Hall or at Venable," Iachetta said.

Students who registered to vote in Charlottesville last year and have since changed their address need to register their new address with the Office of Voter Registration by Oct. 16, Iachetta added.

Area voters will take to the polls Nov. 8, electing representatives to both the Virginia State Senate and House of Delegates.
