Hometown Heroes: Tom Shadyac

If you are a child of the '90s, you loved watching such films as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Nutty Professor, and you have definitely heard of the television series Magnum P.I. Well, you were unknowingly watching University alumnus Tom Shadyac at work. Shadyac has more than 25 years of experience in the entertainment world, beginning as a joke-writer for iconic comedian Bob Hope and eventually becoming a screenwriter, actor, director and producer. Shadyac played a student in Magnum P.I. and directed such notable films as Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty and Evan Almighty.

Shadyac also produced Nutty Professor II, Accepted, I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry and other films. This Hollywood regular was born and raised in Virginia and graduated from the University in 1981. His latest effort is the documentary I Am, which is inspired by his recovery from a near-death bicycle accident and his subsequent decision to give away his Hollywood fortune, sell his mansion and move into a trailer park.
