JAG School celebrates 60 years

Diamond Jubilee anniversary marks 60 years on Grounds

The Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School celebrated 60 years on Grounds Wednesday with its Diamond Jubilee anniversary ceremony. The JAG School is the only federally recognized institution which grants master's degrees in military law.

"We truly are the premier military legal institution in the nation and in the world," said Thomas Ayres, brigadier general and JAG school commander.

University President Teresa A. Sullivan spoke at the ceremony, as did a historian who discussed how the JAG school came to the University.

The reception afterwards hosted guests from the University including Law School Dean Paul Mahoney and Prof. Bob Turner, associate director of the National Security Law Center.

"This was a wonderful opportunity to bring together some current leaders and old veterans to celebrate these 60 years," said Turner, who is himself a veteran.

During World War II, the army wanted to train lawyers about the intricacies of military law and it originally settled on the University of Michigan as a location for an institution, Ayres said. With the beginning of the Korean War, the JAG school moved to its current location at the University. It was an advantage to be close to Washington, D.C. at a universiy of distinction, and at the time the Law School had one of the largest law libraries available, he said. This began a 60-year partnership still in effect today.

"We provide legal advice to commanders no matter where they are deployed," Ayers said, explaining that the JAG Corps makes the "moral, legal [and] ethical" decisions for the army.

Turner said the JAG school does not only serve the army, however.

"This is a wonderful relationship [which] benefitted the University, benefitted the army and benefitted the country," Turner said. He added that the JAG school is "something the University community can be very proud of"
