Cavaliers snatch NCAA Southeast Regional title

For the second consecutive season, the No. 21 Virginia women's cross country team captured the NCAA Southeast Regional title after edging runner-up N.C. State Saturday afternoon by a narrow six-point margin.

The Cavaliers, who tied the Wolfpack in last month's ACC Championship race, tallied 107 total points as a team en route to securing a spot in the overall NCAA Cross Country Championship for the fourth straight year.

Senior Morgane Gay, senior Anna Corrigan and sophomore Chelsea Ley all nabbed All-Southeast Region honors for their respective third-place, 10th-place and 19th-place finishes on the 6K course. Gay, who crossed the finish line at 20:17.0, became only the third Cavalier ever to claim regional honors during all four of her seasons at Virginia.

Fifth-year senior Mark Amirault also racked up All-Regional honors with a third-place finish for the Virginia men's team, which took ninth place in the event. By virtue of his individual performance, Amirault earned an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Championships, which will take place Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind.
