Charlottesville City voters elected two new members to City Council last night, giving seats to Kathleen Galvin and Dede Smith, both Democrats. Incumbent Satyendra Huja, also a Democrat, maintained his seat on Council. Of the seven total candidates, no Republicans competed in the race. The announced results were unofficial as of last night.
All three reported winners gathered at least 4,000 votes, with the next closest candidate gathering less than 3,000. Huja received 4,608 votes; Galvin 4,601 and Smith 4,547 votes.
Council is comprised of five members who serve four-year terms. The other two Council seats will come up for re-election in 2013.
Galvin ran on a platform of increasing sustainability and green infrastructure, as well as increasing housing and transportation options. She has served as a member of the Charlottesville School Board since 2008.
Smith promoted the protection of natural and historic resources, children's welfare and equal opportunity in her campaign. She posted a victory statement on her website thanking all Charlottesville residents for their input on her campaign.
"Our residents are smart, informed, and passionate," Smith wrote. "I am convinced that if we tap this energy and passion, and work together, that we can make Charlottesville the best place to live for everyone."
Huja ran on a platform which included the preservation of the local environment, balancing the transportation system and promoting early childhood education.
