State Sen. Edd Houck, D-Spotslvania, conceded defeat yesterday in the race against Republican Bryce Reeves for the 17th district in the state Senate, according to numerous reports.
Reeves declared victory early Wednesday night by a margin of 86 votes out of about 45,000 cast, entitling Houck to a recount. Houck announced his decision to concede on his Facebook page.
"Today at 2:30 p.m. following a conference call with my legal team and campaign advisors, I determined that I must concede this election," he wrote. "To the hundreds of my supporters, I wish I could have given you the victory you deserve. But, it simply did not happen."
With Houck's concession, the two parties are each represented with 20 seats in the Senate, but any ties will be broken by Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling. The Republicans will also hold an effective majority of 68 in the 100-member House of Delegates, including an independent who caucuses with the GOP.
