Sharon Davie, the founder and director of the University's Women's Center, was honored with the National Women's Studies Association's 2011 Founders Award this past weekend.

Presented to women's centers directors who founded their centers 20 or more years ago, the award is occasionally jokingly described as an "award for longevity," Davie said.

Davie founded the University's Women's Center in 1989, nine years after creating the Women's Studies program at the University.

The women's studies program has now become Studies in Women and Gender, and the once-small Women's Center now has a wide variety of programs, including trauma counseling, sexual and domestic violence services, and several internship programs.

Davie said her work with the center and the Women's Studies program has been one of the most rewarding aspects of her career.

"It felt almost like we were pioneering or creating something," she said. "It's really become a community of teachers and scholars and people who care about change."
