Charlottesville City Council passed a "peace resolution" Tuesday, which calls for Congress to end foreign wars.

The resolution urged Congress to "end foreign ground and drone wars," "refrain from entering new military ventures in Iran" and "redirect military spending to domestic priorities," Mayor Satyendra Huja said.

Huja said although the United States is the world's wealthiest nation, it ranks lower than other countries in life expectancy, infant mortality, education level, housing and environmental sustainability, as well as non-military aid to foreign nations.

Council hopes the money saved from entering war can be used to improve the Charlottesville community, Huja said.

"Peace is an important objective for everybody," he said.
