Family, friends remember late fourth year

Jonathan Hukari

Fourth-year Engineering student Jonathan Hukari, 32, passed away of natural causes last November, Charlottesville Police Lt. Ronnie Roberts said. He was found by a friend in his Charlottesville apartment.

Virginia State Medical Examiner Steve Murman said the autopsy results are still pending.

Hukari was a computer science major in the Engineering School and was involved in the University pep band and the Humane Society.

"[Jonathan] was a loyal and caring friend who we will miss tremendously," said Nora Bungard, a University alumna and former pep band member.

A memorial service was held for Hukari Dec. 4 in Herndon, Va., Associate Dean of Students Aaron Laushway said in an email.

"His family requested that all memorial donations be made to local humane societies in Jon's name," Laushway said.

Laushway said the University will grant Hukari his degree posthumously during graduation ceremonies in May.

"He is survived by his parents, William and Karen Hukari, and brother Jeff, of Ashburn, Virginia, as well as his cats, Delphi and Vex, and his beloved dog, Bender," Laushway said.
