Charlottesville Police Officer Wilbert Brassfield came before the Fluvanna Circuit Court earlier this month after being charged with embezzling more than $10,000 from the Courts of Praise Christian Fellowship in Fluvanna County.
Brassfield was arrested Dec. 21 on three counts of embezzlement following December grand jury indictments.
In early September, Virginia State Police began reviewing Brassfield's time as pastor of the Courts of Praise Christian Fellowship, where he served from 2006 to 2010, Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller said.
The Virginia State Police investigation ended Nov. 2.
"We were made aware that the VSP investigation had been completed and that Officer Brassfield had in fact become a target of the investigation and that indictments would be sought against him in the December grand jury in Fluvanna County Circuit Court," Charlottesville Police Lt. Ronnie Roberts said.
Brassfield, who had been employed as an officer with the Charlottesville Police Department since January 2001, was placed on administrative leave without pay Nov. 3, Roberts said.
Charlottesville Police has not been involved in the investigation or the ongoing hearing.
An arraignment is scheduled at the Fluvanna Circuit Court Friday morning, where Brassfield will plead guilty or not guilty on three counts of embezzlement.
