Board talks budget woes

University underfunded by General Assembly, BOV Finance Committee says

The Board of Visitors Finance Committee discussed Friday the Virginia General Assembly budget, a version of which the state Senate rejected Thursday.

Board member W. Heywood Fralin said the University may have a "real chance" of obtaining more money if it presents a detailed report to legislators in the next session.

Fralin, trustee of the University's Foundation, said the amount of money the University collects per student does not necessarily cover all the costs of a student's education.

"The actual cost of an education exceeds the in-state tuition dollars" and the state support, Fralin said. "There's a message here that we have to be specific in any of our requests [to the General Assembly]" to avoid the disparity between the state's estimated costs of educating an in-state student and the real costs of a University education for an in-state student.

Michael Strine, executive vice president and chief operating officer, said a disproportionate amount of the financial burden is currently shifting toward tuition dollars. He suggested the University should consider how fair it is for wealthier students to facilitate the education of other students by paying higher tuition.
