Members of the Living Wage Campaign marched to Teresa Sullivan's office in Madison Hall yesterday afternoon to deliver a page from "The Social Organization of Work," a book she co-authored with Prof. Randy Hodson, which campaigners said states her support for a living wage.
Campaigners circulated flyers which displayed a quote from the book at their 12 p.m. rally.
"Being paid a living wage for one's work is a necessary condition for self-actualization... the provision of wages adequate to meet basic needs is a fundamental requirement before a job can be experienced as rewarding and meaningful," Hodson and Sullivan wrote in the book.
Three additional students joined the campaign's hunger strike in its fourth day, increasing the number of hunger strikers to 15. Seventeen solidarity fasters, who were fasting for the day in support of the movement, also attended the 12 p.m. rally.
Arts & Sciences Graduate student Dannah Dennis spoke at the rally yesterday, emphasizing the strikers' commitment to attaining a living wage at the University.
"We are not looking for an empty promise, but for substantive action from the University... and how the goal [of the] living wage can be accomplished," Dennis said. "Hunger striking is hard and difficult work. Students and community members are putting their bodies on the line."
