No. 1 Cavs take on Drexel

Stanwick leads reigning national champs into battle against veteran Drexel team

The No. 1 Virginia men's lacrosse team takes the field to face No. 20 Drexel Saturday afternoon.

The Cavaliers, currently top-ranked in major polls and the unanimous top pick in the coaches' poll, begin their title defense without the services of departed seniors Bray Malphrus, John Haldy and Adam Ghitelman. The Cavaliers now have to replace the emotional leadership provided by Malphrus and the versatility of Haldy, who brought size and speed to both the midfield and attack. More importantly, the team must play without Ghitelman, who posted an impressive 50-11 career record as the team's starting goalkeeper.

"I think the obvious [questions about the lineup] are in the goal, where Adam was essentially a four-year starter there," coach Dom Starsia said about his departed players.

Even the Bratton twins - Shamel and Rhamel - whose college careers ended unceremoniously with mid-season dismissals from the team, possessed skill sets which will be missed in Charlottesville this spring.
