Belmont filmmaker Brian Wimer asked Charlottesville City Council members yesterday to consider a grant application for $150,000 to help fund a local bridge project which would better connect Belmont with the Downtown Mall.
Project Gait-Way is the result of a contest hosted by Wimer which called for Architecture students to submit redesigns of the Belmont Bridge.
The winning entry, submitted by 13 Architecture students, completely redesigns the location and replaces the bridge with an at-grade crossing at the railroad tracks.
"This bridge really could change the City," Wimer said.
The Council said further debate on the discussed issues would be needed before a decision could be made. City Manager Maurice Jones said the Council needs to engage the Charlottesville community with the redesign project.
