Matmen keep streak alive

The No. 20 Virginia wrestling team took to the road Saturday for the first time since its Jan. 13 defeat of N.C. State, looking to win its seventh consecutive dual meet victory. The Cavaliers traveled to Boone, NC, where they defeated Appalachian State, 29-12.

The meet kicked off with the 141-pound weight class where No. 7 redshirt senior Nick Nelson secured a tightly contested 3-0 decision to improve his record to 21-2 for the year.

Virginia won the next two bouts to extend its lead to 12-0 as both sophomore Gus Sako and redshirt junior Jedd Moore continued to dominate their opponents. Moore scored his second tech fall in as many weeks, defeating redshirt senior Chip Powell 19-4. Sako, the reigning ACC Wrestler of the Week, won easily in a rematch against senior Savva Kostis, 15-5.

Appalachian State's first victory of the day came at the 165-pound weight class where No. 15 senior Kyle Blevins managed a 4-0 decision against No. 16 redshirt freshman Nick Sulzer.

The Cavaliers rebounded in the next weight class, however, when freshman Vinny Waldhauser pinned freshman Jesse Johnson in 4 minutes 5 seconds.

The Mountaineers came back in the 184-pound weight class as No. 12 senior Austin Trotman managed an 8-3 decision against freshman Nick Kidd, who was wrestling in place of No. 14 redshirt sophomore Jon Fausey.

The Cavaliers finished strong, taking the last three contested weight classes.

Virginia forfeited the 125-pound weight class for the second week in a row without No. 11 redshirt junior Matt Snyder.

Virginia freshman Joseph Martinez scored a 16-6 major decision over junior Brett Boston to close out the match.
