The No. 3 Virginia men's tennis team cruised past in-state rival No. 37 Virginia Tech 6-1 in Blacksburg Sunday, rebounding from last week's loss against No. 2 Ohio State, the Cavaliers' first loss of the season.
Virginia (8-1, 2-0 ACC) stayed undefeated in conference play and kept its 80-match ACC winning streak alive while handing the Hokies (4-3, 2-1 ACC) their first conference loss of the season.
Virginia began the match with a one-point lead after winning the doubles point despite Virginia Tech's No. 54 team of seniors Luka Somen and Corrado Tocci upsetting the Cavaliers' No. 12 duo of senior Drew Courtney and junior Jarmere Jenkins 9-7 on the first court.
The No. 42 combo of sophomore Alex Domijan and senior Steven Rooda ousted seniors Patrick Daciek and Jonathan Pine 8-3. Freshman Mitchell Frank and junior Julen Uriguen edged junior Lucas Oliveira and freshman Hunter Koontz to preserve the Cavaliers' eighth doubles point in nine tries this spring.
Virginia wasted no time in thrashing the Hokies in singles, clinching the match with three straight-set wins. No. 37 sophomore Justin Shane finished first, winning consecutive 6-2 sets against freshman Mauricio Antun on the fourth court. No. 1 Frank rebounded from the first loss of his collegiate singles career, dominating Oliveira en route to a 6-1, 6-0 victory on court two. Courtney iced the win with a hard fought 6-4, 6-3 win against Daciek on the third court.
Tocci defeated Uriguen 6-3, 6-4 at court five for Virginia Tech's sole point.
Virginia took the final two points of the match. After dropping the first set, senior Philippe Oudshoorn downed junior Trpimir Kujundzic 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 on court six. On the first court Domijan kept his composure after also dropping the first set and emerged with an impressive 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 win against No. 30 Somen.
The Cavaliers travel to Mississippi next week to take on No. 15 Mississippi State in Starkville March 6 and No. 22 Mississippi in Oxford March 7.
