Medal recipients announced

The University and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation yesterday announced the recipients of the Foundation's Medals in architecture, law and citizen leadership.

Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell and Jessica Tuchman Mathews, president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, will receive the Medals for architecture, law and citizen leadership, respectively, for their contributions to the public good.

The medals "recognize achievements of those who embrace endeavors in which Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and third U.S. president, excelled and held in high regard," according to a University press statement.

The award honors Moneo's work designing modern buildings with an eye to their surroundings.

Mitchell received the Medal for playing a significant role in mediating a peace accord in Northern Ireland after being appointed as President Clinton's special advisor on Ireland in 1995.

"Mathews was honored specifically for leading the first truly global non-partisan think tank," Batten School Asst. Dean Gerry Warburg said.

The Medal is considered the University's highest external honor, Foundation spokesperson Lisa Stites said.

Selection of medal recipients is a joint effort between the Foundation and selection committees from the University's Law, Architecture and Batten Schools. The selection committees are headed by the deans of each school, who appoint the committee members and serve as chairs.

The awards will be presented to the individuals at Monticello April 13, Thomas Jefferson's birthday.
