The No. 1 Virginia men's lacrosse team exploded for a 9-0 run in the first half yesterday to pull away from Mount St. Mary's en route to a 17-5 romp in Emmitsburg, Md.
Senior attacker Chris Bocklet matched a career-high with six goals and senior attacker Steele Stanwick chipped in with two goals and two assists for the Cavaliers (4-0, 0-0 ACC), who never trailed.
Just 1 minute 56 seconds into the first quarter, Bocklet capitalized on an extra-man opportunity to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Mount St. Mary's (1-1, 0-0 Northeast) junior midfielder Daniel Stranix responded to Bocklet's play at the 10:47 mark to even the score at one, but the Mountaineers quickly lost their grip on the game.
The Cavaliers fired 35 shots at Mountaineer sophomore goalie Chris Klaiber through three quarters to take a 15-3 lead into the fourth quarter.
Virginia won the ground balls battle 38-21 and won 17-of-26 faceoffs. The Cavaliers also produced their most efficient extra man attacking day of the season, converting on 3-of-5 chances after going just 2-of-7 in their first three games.
Coach Dom Starsia's squad welcomes rival Syracuse (2-0, 0-0 Big East) Sunday at 4:30 p.m. ESPN will televise the game nationally.
