Gerson, Thompson to miss 2012-13 season

All-ACC defender Gerson will apply for medical redshirt following hip surgery

Virginia women’s basketball coach Joanne Boyle announced Friday that seniors guard Lexie Gerson and forward Erinn Thompson will miss the entire 2012-13 season due to injuries.

Gerson underwent hip surgery in early September and will apply for a medical redshirt to move her final year of eligibility to the 2013-14 season. Thompson, who played just three games as a freshman in 2009 due to a fractured tibia, developed compartment syndrome as a result of the initial injury and will not return to the team.

Gerson emerged as the Cavaliers best defensive player after an injury to then-junior guard China Crosby created an opening in the starting lineup. Gerson was named to the 2011-12 ACC All-Defensive team after finishing 14th in the nation with 3.1 steals per game.

The injury leaves Virginia with two returning starters in senior center Simone Egwu and 2011-12 All-ACC Honorable Mention junior guard Ataira Franklin in addition to a recovering Crosby.
