Perhaps the 2012-2013 season will finally be the one when the Virginia men’s tennis team earns its elusive NCAA championship. The Cavaliers return to competition this weekend for the first time since falling to USC in the national title match this past spring.
After the Trojans knocked Virginia out of the NCAA tournament for the fourth consecutive year and second straight time in the final round, the Cavaliers will take the court with a lineup mostly intact from last season. Senior Jarmere Jenkins, junior Alex Domijan and sophomore Mitchell Frank all return to form a star-studded lineup, although Frank is expected to be out until January while recovering from knee surgery. Junior Justin Shane and senior Julen Uriguen also bring big-match experience.
In addition, coach Brian Boland brought in the nation’s top-ranked recruiting class. Freshmen Harrison Richmond, Ryan Shane, Mac Styslinger, Alex Scheinman, Jonathan Cornish and Mitchell Polnet will challenge the veterans for places in the lineup. All six rookies will receive their first taste of collegiate competition this weekend, playing in front of a home crowd at the Snyder tennis courts.
The tournament features a 64-player singles draw with athletes from 16 schools. Thirty-two doubles tandems will also take part. Each draw is broken into four separate brackets. Jenkins and Domijan are seeded at the top of their respective singles brackets. In doubles, Styslinger will team with Jenkins as a No.1 seed.
