The Virginia cross country team kicked off its season on Friday by hosting the U.Va. Duals at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va. The meet was an early-season tune-up, but it gave the Cavaliers valuable experience for the upcoming season.
Senior Barbara Strehler stepped into the void left by the departed Catherine White, and was the first affiliated runner to cross the finish line in the abbreviated four kilometer race. The Cavalier women ran the table, filling each of the top five spots.
Junior Kathleen Stevens placed second followed by graduate student Vicky Fouhy. Seniors Ariel Karabinus and Dena O’Brien rounded out the top five. This dominant performance led the Virginia women to an easy win against opponents Radford and Liberty.
The men’s team found equal success at Panorama Farms. Sophomore Kyle King won the 4k, and redshirt freshman Adam Visokay, senior Chris Foley, sophomore Jack St. Marie and senior Bryan Lewis finished in line behind King.
Friday’s race was more of a practice than a true meet. Typically, the men race on an eight-kilometer course while the women run six kilometers. The shortened race gave coach Brian Fetzer an opportunity to try out a different set of runners.
Neither team will compete again until Sept. 28 when they host the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational.
