In their last action of the fall season, the No. 12 Virginia men’s golf team turned in one of its strongest performances, finishing in fourth place at the U.S. Collegiate Championship in Alpharetta, Ga. Senior Ben Rusch led the way for the Cavaliers, finishing second overall.
The tournament featured nine teams ranked in the top 25 nationally, including No. 2 Georgia Tech, No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 5 Oklahoma State. The Yellow Jackets were in first place after the opening round, shooting a combined 279 to take a five-stroke lead ahead of Oklahoma State. Virginia shot a 285 to finish tied for third with Texas A&M. Rusch shot a six-under 66 to sit atop the leaderboard, tied with Georgia Tech junior Ollie Schniederjans.
Saturday’s second round saw Virginia fall down the team leaderboard, as the Cavaliers shot a 290 and slipped into sixth place. Rusch was not as sharp as the previous day, finishing with a 2-over 74 to move to a tie for 3rd, but junior Denny McCarthy carded a 70 to move into 13th place overall. Oklahoma State shot a combined 281 to take the team lead. Schniederjans retained his individual lead with a 69.
Virginia rebounded Sunday, carding a combined 288 to move up to fourth place. Rusch shot a 2-under 70 to finish second overall, four strokes behind Schniederjans. McCarthy finished 15th overall with a final-day 72. Oklahoma State was able to retain their slim one-stroke lead ahead of Georgia Tech, as both teams shot a 284 on the final day.
The Cavaliers will not see action again until the spring, with their first tournament coming in mid-March.
