Student Council drafted a bill at a small group session Tuesday to address concerns about recent cuts to AccessUVa, the University’s financial aid program. Council hopes the bill will make visible the actions Council is taking to make financial aid a priority at the University.
Ten Council members, including Caitlyn Veith of the Student Concerns Committee, Council President Eric McDaniel and Representative Body Chair Michael Promisel, drafted the bill.
Council members said they want to emphasize to the Board of Visitors that financial aid needs to be a priority.
“This is something students should care about and something our institution should plan for in the long run,” McDaniel said.
Council announced plans to have buttons made with the slogan, “Students care about AccessUVa, let’s make it happen” to show their commitment to the issue.
The bill says Council “fully supports the equal opportunity for all qualifying students to receive an education at the University” and cites Thomas Jefferson’s vision that income should not prevent students from attending the University.
Council plans to ask the Board to consider alternative options, such as fundraising or cutting back on other spending, to make financial aid a priority.
The proposed language of the bill resolves that Council “strongly urges the Board of Visitors to incorporate the return to all grant-based aid as priority to the strategic plan of the University” and encourages alumni to contribute to the AccessUVa endowment.
The bill will likely be introduced next week to the Student Concerns and External Affairs Committees to finalize the language before Council can come to a vote on final passage.
