The Virginia volleyball team dropped a pair of road ACC matches this past weekend against Florida State and Miami to fall to 15-11 on the season and 8-5 in the conference.

The Cavaliers lost in four sets (17-25, 15-25, 25-20, 22-25) in their first weekend match against conference-leader Florida State in Tallahassee Friday night .

The Cavaliers were three points away from taking the match into a deciding fifth set, but the No. 3 Seminoles (24-0, 12-0 ACC) won four straight points — two on Virginia attack errors — to close the deal and continue their 24-game win streak.

Florida State easily took the first and second sets after out-hitting the Cavaliers .440 to .118 and .346 and .100. Virginia never led in the first set, but stayed close in the second — until the Seminoles went on an 11-point run to seize control.

The Cavaliers claimed the third set by taking an early 11-5 lead and slightly out-hitting the Seminoles, .263 to .235.

Sophomore outside hitter Jasmine Burton led the Cavaliers with 13 kills. Junior middle hitter Natalie Bausback added 12 kills on .526 hitting.

Freshman outside hitter Milica Kubura led the Seminoles with 13 kills on .632 hitting. Redshirt senior libero Katie Mosher added 21 digs, while redshirt sophomore middle blocker Sarah Burrington assisted on nine of Florida State’s 12 blocks.

Virginia closed out its four-game road trip with another four-set loss (25-23, 17-25, 21-25, 19-25) Sunday against Miami (17-7, 10-3 ACC).

After winning the first set despite a Miami comeback at 22-16, Virginia never led a set again — minus at 1-0 to start the fourth.

In the second set, the Hurricanes had 10 kills against just one error. They would finish with only 13 errors in the match to the Cavaliers’ 23.

The Hurricanes also out-blocked and out-served the Cavaliers, hitting 12 blocks and seven service aces in comparison to the Cavaliers’ three blocks and two service aces.

In the third and fourth sets, the Cavaliers hung close to the Hurricanes, but Miami used runs of 7-0 and 9-3 to pull away and win the sets. The Cavaliers did win five straight points in the middle of the fourth set, but a Miami timeout stopped the Virginia comeback.

Senior outside hitter Tori Janowski led the Cavaliers with 16 kills. Burton added 14 kills on .435 hitting, and sophomore outside hitter Haley Kole contributed 15 kills. Senior outside hitter Savanah Leaf led the Hurricanes with 17 kills on 53 attempts.

The Cavaliers return home this Friday to face Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. in Memorial Gymnasium.
