University police respond to suicide at Bice apartments

Fourth-year College student Hunter Smith died Wednesday, the Office of the Dean of Students has announced. A University press release stated the cause of death was unconfirmed, however, University Police responded to a suicide at 583 Brandon Avenue — Bice apartments — that day.

Smith graduated from Blacksburg High School in 2011. He is survived by his mother, Carol Crawford Smith of Blacksburg, his father, Mark H. Smith of Portsmouth, and his brother Garland.

"UPD is investigating this incident and have no reason to believe foul play is involved or that there is any threat to the community. The medical examiner has not released an official cause of death and the investigation is on-going," University spokesperson Anthony De Bruyn said in an email.

Smith is the fourth University student to pass away this semester. He was a Mathematics major and Environmental Sciences minor and had a talent for learning languages.
