No. 8 Women's lacrosse falls to No. 3 Syracuse

Orange defeat Cavaliers in nail-biting match

After losing to No. 6 Northwestern by just one goal earlier in the season, the No. 8 Virginia women’s lacrosse team lost yet another nail-biter, 14-13, on Monday evening to No. 3 Syracuse.

The Cavaliers (1-2, 0-1 ACC) took five shots and scored on two of them in the opening five minutes of the game but would only attempt four more shots during the rest of the opening half as the Orange (4-0, 1-0 ACC) outshot them 19-9 in the first half.

Syracuse also won 11 of the 14 draw controls in the first half, giving them more possessions than Virginia.

The Cavaliers held a 4-1 lead at the 14:53 mark before the Orange reeled off five straight goals in the next eight minutes to take a 6-4 lead. Neither team would score for nearly the next six minutes as the two teams combined for six turnovers and ten fouls in that span. Virginia broke the drought and pulled within one, but Syracuse closed out the half scoring two more goals to take an 8-5 lead into halftime.

The two teams traded goals to start the second half before the Cavaliers scored three straight to tie up the game, 9-9, but the Orange would score the ensuing goal and force Virginia to play catch up each time it tied the game. With five minutes left, Syracuse held a 14-11 advantage that Virginia almost overcame — the Cavaliers came within one goal with two minutes remaining but could not win the ensuing draw control nor capitalize on an Orange turnover to attempt a game-tying shot.

Syracuse finished the game with 20 draw controls compared to the Cavaliers’ nine. The Orange also committed 11 more fouls than Virginia, but the Cavaliers could not capitalize.

Senior attacker Kayla Treanor led Syracuse with five goals and two assists on nine shots, while junior attacker Kelly Boyd led the Cavaliers with four goals and two assists — a career-high six points. Both goalies finished the game with 10 saves.

The Cavaliers will return to the field on Saturday against Penn State.
