Rowing caps fall season with victories at Rivanna Romp

The Virginia women’s rowing team capped its fall season in style Sunday morning on the Rivanna Reservoir, registering a pair of wins at the Rivanna Romp. The host Cavaliers — dominant at the regatta over the past decade — posted multiple standout times in both the Varsity Eights and Varsity Four races.

Four of Virginia’s five boats finished in the top six of the 21-boat Varsity Eights race, with the Cavaliers’ Varsity Eight A — composed of seniors Sam Casto, Tessa Dikkers, Mackenzi Sherman, Jennifer Reid and Chelsea Adams, juniors Colette Lucas-Conwell and Georgia Ratcliff, sophomore Alice Darry and freshman Alexandra Natale — taking first in 13:11:1. Virginia’s Varsity Eight A has now claimed victory at the romp 10 years running.

The Cavaliers’ Varsity Eight B, C and D boats placed second, fifth and sixth, respectively. The Varsity Eight E, meanwhile, placed 18th.

Virginia proved even tougher in the 26-boat Varsity Four race, posting the top three times as well as five of the top seven. The Cavaliers’ Varsity Four A — comprised of Lucas-Conwell, Sherman, Dikkers, Ratcliff and junior Erin Briggs — won the race in 14:39:8. Virginia’s B and C boats followed in second and third place, while Clemson and Duke’s top boats took fourth and fifth.

Columbia, Louisville, Navy and Pennsylvania also competed at the regatta.

The Cavaliers will be back in competition March 12-13 at the Oak Ridge Invite in Oak Ridge, Tenn., where they will open the spring season in search of an NCAA championship.
