Chance the Rapper debuted his newest single “Angels,” a track from his upcoming unnamed third mixtape, on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Oct. 26. While the single was not the much-anticipated song featuring Colbert that fans expected, it was still a very pleasant surprise.
“Angels” is both catchy and lyrically clever as exhibited by phrases like, “Got the industry in disbelief, they be asking for beef/ This what it sound like when God split an atom with me/ I even have Steve giving out apples for free.”
The new song illustrates Chance the Rapper’s musical evolution since the days of his early mixtapes, “10 Day” and “Acid Rap.” He has retained his fun and flowing lyrics while talking about his life in fame and his passions, as shown by pieces like, “It’s too many young angels on the southside/ Got us scared to let our grandmamas outside.” In a similar way, he says, “I just had a growth spurt/ It done took so long my tippy toes hurt/ You can keep the nose ring, I don’t have to soul search/ I’m still at my old church, only ever sold merch,” referencing his desire to remain the same person at heart, as well as his tradition of not selling any of his music, this track included.
Overall this track from Chance the Rapper is just as great as, if not superior to, his previous work and is certainly worth a listen.
