In a packed John Paul Jones Arena, the No. 2 Virginia men’s basketball team improved to 13-0 at home this season and 8-0 in the ACC with a crushing 61-36 win over No. 18 Clemson Tuesday night.
In the 11th-straight win for the Cavaliers (19-1, 8-0 ACC), Clemson (16-4, 5-3 ACC) proved unable to crack Virginia’s defense, and became the 10th Virginia opponent to be held under 50 points this season.
In the first half, the Cavaliers got off to a quick 7-0 run to start the game. However, even with Clemson shooting 20 percent from three and turning it over nine times, the Tigers led for a majority of the half. But, after gaining momentum with under two minutes until half-time, the Cavaliers reclaimed the lead and went into the locker room up 27-23.
Virginia’s defense picked up right where it left off at half-time, and continued to stifle Clemson’s offense in the second half. The Tigers finished the night shooting 31.9 percent overall, and were a mere 15 percent from three, after hitting just three of their 20 shots from behind the arc. The Cavaliers also forced Clemson to a total of 19 turnovers.
Meanwhile, the Virginia offense — sparked by senior guard Devon Hall and sophomore guard Kyle Guy — came to life in the second half. Hall finished with a team-high of 14 points, while Guy picked up 12 points. Sophomore guard Ty Jerome also added to the Cavaliers’ lead, scoring all eight of his points in the second half. Additionally, Virginia’s offense got a boost from redshirt freshman guard De’Andre Hunter, who had seven points off the bench, and junior center Jack Salt, who had six points. As a team, Virginia shot 44.6 percent for the night and 36.8 percent from three.
The Cavaliers will now hit the road and head to Durham, N.C. Saturday to take on No. 4 Duke. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
