Swimming and diving splits meet with Louisville

The No. 7 women’s team won, while the No. 16 men’s team fell short

The No. 7 Virginia women’s swimming and diving team defeated No. 8 Louisville 214-137, while the No. 16 Virginia men’s swimming and diving team lost to No. 13 Louisville 214-139. 

The meet took place on Friday and Saturday and the women’s team was able to take control of the contest by winning nine of 10 events on Saturday. 

Sophomores Emma Seiberlich and Paige Madden each won two events for the Cavaliers. Seiberlich won the women’s 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke, while Madden took home first-place honors in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events. 

Freshman Kaki Christensen won the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke. Junior Morgan Hill won the 50-yard freestyle, and she also won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.33 — the No. 9 time in the country this season. Sophomore Abby Richter won the 200-yard individual medley and senior Rachel Politi won the 400-yard individual medley.

Junior Sydney Dusel won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events, posting a career-high score of 342.30 on the three-meter board. 

The women’s team also recorded first-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. 

On the men’s side, sophomore Matthew Otto won the 200-yard breaststroke and sophomore Samuel Schilling won the 200-yard freestyle. Junior Bryce Shelton won the one-meter diving event.

Virginia will take 12 members of its team to the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Purdue University next Saturday and Sunday. Head coach Todd DeSorbo will serve as the women’s coach for the ACC.
