No. 14 women’s lacrosse passes first road test against Elon

The Cavaliers rode a dominant first half to an 11-4 victory over the Phoenix

The No. 14 Virginia women’s lacrosse team defeated Elon 11-4 in a road contest Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field in Elon, N.C.

The Cavaliers (2-0, 0-0 ACC) started quickly, scoring two goals within the first 1:14 of the game. After the Phoenix (1-1, 0-0 CAA) scored and cut the deficit to 3-1, Virginia responded with four consecutive goals to go into halftime with a 7-1 lead. 

Virginia extended its lead to eight with two early goals in the second half and cruised to victory from then on.

Sophomore midfielder Ashlyn McGovern recorded a hat trick in the win, while senior attacker Avery Shoemaker, freshman midfielder Annie Dyson and junior midfielder Nora Bowen each added two goals. Junior midfielder Sammy Mueller and senior midfielder Maggie Jackson rounded out the scoring for the Cavaliers with one goal apiece. 

Jackson the led Cavaliers with five points — one goal and four assists. Dyson tallied four points on two goals and two assists. Junior goalkeeper Charlie Campbell stopped five of nine shots on goal.

With the win, Virginia improves to 2-0 on the season, reaching that mark for the second consecutive season. Up next for the Cavaliers is another road game against rival Richmond Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Robins Stadium. The next home game for the team is Saturday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium against Princeton.
