After defeating USF and UCF in Florida earlier this week, the No. 3 Virginia men’s tennis team headed to North Carolina for the weekend to face No. 27 N.C. State (11-6, 2-1 ACC) and No. 2 Wake Forest (16-3, 4-0 ACC), whom the Cavaliers upset at home in February.
Virginia started off cold against N.C. State at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center, quickly dropping a doubles point. However, the Cavaliers quickly jumped back on the wagon, as freshman No. 50 Brandon Nakashima in the number two spot defeated junior Igor Saveljic.
This win was followed up by an upset, with No. 25 Wolfpack junior Alexis Galarneau defeating No. 15 Cavalier junior Carl Soderlund — putting the Wolfpack up 2-1 early in the contest. Nevertheless, three straight grueling wins by No. 96 sophomore Gianni Ross, redshirt senior Henrik Wiersholm, and sophomore Matthew Lord gave the Cavaliers a 4-2 victory.
The Cavaliers followed up this conference win with a Sunday afternoon matchup against No. 2 Wake Forest, the 2018 national champions, at the Wake Forest Tennis Center. Virginia previously defeated the Demon Deacons at Boar’s Head Sports Club in February.
This time around, however, the Cavaliers were not as fortunate. Despite Soderlund’s upset of No. 2 senior Petros Chrysochos, Virginia had no answers for the Demon Deacons as they fell 6-1.
Virginia now moves on to face Georgia Tech (7-6, 2-2 ACC) at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center March 22 at 3 p.m.
