Virginia (15-11, 4-2 ACC) traveled to College Park, Md. Tuesday to beat the Terrapins (16-12, 0-0 Big 10). Freshman pitcher Clare Zureich dominated on the mound for the Cavaliers, allowing no hits in five innings of relief. She gave up no walks and had four strikeouts.
The Terrapins took a one-run lead in the first inning when sophomore outfielder JoJo McRae led off with an inside the park home run. They were held scoreless for the remainder of the game with just four hits on the day.
Virginia tied things up in the top of the second with a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly by freshman infielder Abigail Barber.
The score was even until the top of the fifth when freshman outfielder Tori Gilbert led the inning with a double to left center. Sophomore infielder Hayley Busby knocked in a pair of runs with a homer to right center in the next at-bat. Senior pitcher Erika Osherow followed with a single later in the inning and a double by senior catcher Olivia Gott scored one to give Virginia a three-run lead.
The Cavaliers stayed hot at the plate, coming up with three more hits in the sixth to make it a 7-1 game. Gilbert’s three-run home run off the scoreboard in right center gave Virginia insurance going into the final two innings.
Virginia will continue ACC play this weekend in a three-game series against Duke. The first game will start at 5 p.m. at The Park Friday, March 22.
