The No. 8 Virginia women’s lacrosse team defeated Penn State 16-13 at Panzer Stadium in State College, Pa., Sunday afternoon.

Virginia (10-5, 1-4 ACC) got off to a hot start, scoring three consecutive goals in the first 5:12. Penn State (5-7, 3-3 B10) had an answer and went on a 3-0 run of its own to tie the game. The two teams then each went on 2-0 runs and proceeded to trade goals for the remainder of the first half. After a tightly contested first half, the score was even at seven heading into the break.

Penn State scored 31 seconds into the second half to take its first lead of the game. Virginia went on a 2-0 run to retake the lead, but Penn State again tied it with a little over 25 minutes to play. After the Cavaliers scored two straight goals, the Nittany Lions scored four of the game’s next five goals to take a 13-12 lead with 9:25 remaining. Senior attacker Angie Loynaz tied the game a little over a minute later, and senior attacker Avery Shoemaker scored the go-ahead goal for the Cavaliers with six minutes remaining. Virginia kept Penn State from scoring for the remainder of the game and added two more goals to seal the victory.

Shoemaker and senior midfielder Maggie Jackson led the Cavaliers with four goals apiece. Sophomore midfielder Ashlyn McGovern recorded a hat trick, and Loynaz and junior midfielder Sammy Mueller each scored two goals. Freshman midfielder Lillie Kloak also found the back of the net to round out the scoring for the Cavaliers. Junior goalkeeper Charlie Campbell stopped 13 of 26 shots on goal from the Nittany Lions.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Virginia after previously falling to the two top-ranked teams in the country. The Cavaliers return home to face Louisville Saturday. Opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium.
