The No. 22 men, led by junior Rohann Asfaw, finished first in the Cavalier Classic at Panorama Farms.

Returning for a second consecutive home competition, Virginia cross country resumes action Sept. 27 with the Panorama Farms Invitational in Earlysville, Va.

The men’s team is currently No. 22 in the USTFCCCA NCAA DI Men’s Cross Country rankings. The Cavaliers recorded a first-place finish in the Cavalier Classic Sept. 14. Virginia racked up 29 points as five Cavaliers finished in the top 10. Junior Rohann Asfaw paved the way and secured the individual title in the 8K with a time of 24:25.9.

The women’s team will compete with their full squad for the first time this season. Virginia placed third in the Cavalier Classic, recording 72 points. Junior Hannah Moran finished sixth overall to lead the Cavaliers with a time of 17:31.0 in the 5K. This Friday, returning runners sophomore Abbey Green, sophomore Helena Lindsay and junior Kiera Bothwell take center stage.

The men’s 8K will take place at 9:30 a.m. and the women’s 6K will follow at 10:15 a.m. The women’s race includes Bucknell, Charlotte, Elon, Florida, High Point, Kentucky, Liberty, No.11 Michigan State, Norfolk State, Radford, Richmond, William & Mary, Winthrop, Wofford and Yale. The same schools are bringing men’s teams in addition to Butler and Wake Forest. Michigan State’s No. 11 women and the No. 22 Virginia men are the only ranked teams in their respective races.

The meet will be a good indication of Virginia’s depth and runners will look to run as a pack, feed off each other’s energy and stay in a steady rhythm. Furthermore, the competition will set the stage for the direction both cross country teams are headed approaching the national meets in October.
