No. 1 Virginia went on the road Friday to take on Miami, recording a shutout victory against the Hurricanes (3-5-2, 0-3-1 ACC). The Cavaliers (10-0-2, 2-0-2 ACC) found their rhythm early, applying strong offensive pressure. Miami couldn’t keep up as freshman midfielder Diana Ordonez and sophomore midfielder Alexa Spaanstra produced goals to lead to the 3-0 final.
Virginia took on Miami as they have every opponent this season, controlling the momentum of the game at the outset. The unranked Hurricanes were unable to generate scoring opportunities as they produced just two shots to the Cavaliers’ 15 in the match.
Ordonez took no time in adding to her already-impressive goal count, finding the back of the net in the second minute of play. Junior midfielder Anna Sumpter served the assist, receiving a pass from sophomore forward Rebecca Jarrett from the right corner and sending a shot on target. Ordonez charged into the box, meeting Sumpter’s shot with a diving header to redirect the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Speaks.
Virginia limited Miami’s offensive efforts, forcing the Hurricanes to get rid of the ball quickly and causing turnovers. While the Cavaliers were 7-1 in shots in the first 45 minutes of play, Miami was able to hold Virginia to a 1-0 lead going into the half.
The Cavaliers kicked off the second half in similar fashion with a quick goal in the 50th minute by Spaanstra. Spaanstra fired a shot from just outside the six past the Miami keeper to extend the Virginia lead to 2-0. The goal was Spaanstra’s third this season.
In the 59th minute, Ordonez buried another shot for the Cavaliers. Jarrett sent a perfect cross through traffic that found Ordonez open in the box. The freshman collected the ball before firing her shot from close range to push the lead to 3-0. Ordonez currently leads the ACC with 12 goals on the season.
The game was a homecoming for junior goalkeeper Laurel Ivory, a native of Surfside, Fla. Ivory posted her eighth clean sheet on the season, contributing a save on Miami’s sole on-target attempt.
Virginia resumes play on the road and travels to Raleigh, N.C., to face N.C. State Wednesday at 7 p.m.
