Coming off a pair of losses last weekend against Tennessee, the Virginia swimming and diving teams won in convincing fashion against Wisconsin in their first meet at the Aquatic and Fitness Center this season. The No. 4 Cavalier women defeated the Badgers 193-124, while the No. 13 Virginia men won 192-120.
Virginia swimmers placed first in 22 of the 30 swimming events in which points were awarded. The Cavaliers also had top performers in three of four diving events, conceding only the men’s three-meter dive to Wisconsin.
Senior Sydney Dusel won both the 1m and 3m dives on the women’s side, and senior Bryce Shelton was victorious in the 1m event on the men’s side.
Both the men’s and women’s teams took a commanding lead on the first day of action, leading 116-70 and 126-60, respectively.
"We had a good first session tonight against Wisconsin,” Coach Todd Desorbo said Friday. “The team is really proving to be a phenomenal team and a great group of teammates who support each other. They are performing really well even after some really intense training over the last couple of weeks.”
Freshman Kate Douglass toppled the pool record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:07.92 — more than four seconds faster than the previous record. Douglass also came within .3 seconds of a program record when she swam a 2:13.77 in the 200 individual medley on the second day of the meet.
Other freshmen showed promise as well. Freshman swimmers Maddie Donohoe and Konnor Klinksiek posted their first winning performances. Donohoe won the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 9:55.63, and Klinksiek won the 100 yard butterfly in 48.41.
“It is fun to see them start thriving in the program,” Desorbo said.
Other notable male performers include senior Ted Schubert, who won both the 1000 freestyle and 200 butterfly and junior Keefer Barnum, who won the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
Senior Morgan Hill also swam well at the meet, winning the 50 and 100 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.
The Virginia relay teams were exceptional as well, winning five of six events and allowing just one Badger win in the women’s 400 meter freestyle.
The Cavaliers will have an extended break before swimming heads to Knoxville, Tenn., and diving travels to Atlanta Nov. 21. They will be competing in the Tennessee Swimming Invitational and the Georgia Tech Diving Invite, respectively.
