Senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby was named to the Academic All-America Division I women’s basketball third team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Monday.
Just days after being named to the All-ACC first team and receiving the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, Willoughby adds yet another honor to her long list of accomplishments.
Willoughby joins an exclusive group of just six other Cavaliers to be named an Academic All-American in Virginia women’s basketball history. She is the first to do so in over two decades — since Jenny Boucek was honored in 1996.
Willoughby was one of 15 women’s basketball players from across the country to be named to either the Academic All-America first, second or third team. The average GPA of all 15 players — who are enrolled in either undergraduate or graduate programs — was 3.88.
Currently pursuing a master’s degree at the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, Willoughby’s GPA of 3.87 outpaces the third-team average of 3.798.
The other members of the third team include High Point senior guard Camryn Brown, Vermont senior forward Hanna Crymble, Oklahoma State junior forward Vivian Gray and DePaul senior forward Chante Stonewall. Outside of Willoughby, no other ACC player was named an Academic All-American.
In addition to her academic excellence, Willoughby also played well under the bright lights in the last season of her collegiate playing career. She led both her team and the entire ACC in scoring with an average of 19.2 points per game. Moreover, she was also a role model for others on the team, helping younger players develop both on and off the court.
Willoughby has certainly left her mark on the women’s basketball program at Virginia. Along with maintaining high academic standards, Willoughby will leave the team with 1,677 career points, 868 rebounds and 24 double-doubles — ninth, sixth and eleventh in program history, respectively.
