Attempted robbery reported on Jefferson Park Avenue

A male suspect brandished a knife and demanded money

The 20 year-old male suspect brought a knife into a business then fled to Maury Avenue. According to a witness, he wore blue jeans, a t-shirt and a black jacket.

The Charlottesville Police Department responded to an attempted robbery Sunday at 6:45 p.m. at 2115 Jefferson Park Avenue, per a community alert sent Sunday evening by Timothy Longo, chief of the University Police Department and vice president for security and safety. 

Per the alert, a 20 year-old male suspect brought a knife into a business then fled to Maury Avenue. According to a witness, he wore blue jeans, a t-shirt and a black jacket.

No injuries were reported, and the suspect's connection to the University remains unknown.

This incident is the first robbery alert of 2023. Five aggravated assaults were reported in the fall semester. Three of these aggravated assaults — which occurred Nov. 11,  Oct. 17 and Oct. 26 — involved an individual firing a BB-like projectile from a passing car.

Community alerts are shared via email to the University community when there is timely information about a threat that can be released to the community without compromising any ongoing investigations. Timely warnings are issued when there is an ongoing threat to the community.
