Mike Pompeo, former U.S. secretary of state and CIA director under the Trump administration, will speak at the University’s Newcomb Hall Sept. 25. Attendees can reserve free tickets for the event hosted by the Jefferson Council for U.Va., Young America’s Foundation, the Center for Politics at U.Va., the Common Sense Society and U.Va. College Republicans.
The exact contents of Pompeo’s speech have not been announced, but the address is entitled “Talk softly but carry America with you: Inside negotiations on the world stage.”
As director of the CIA from 2017 to 2018, Pompeo gained attention from Trump, who then promoted him to secretary of state. Pompeo took an aggressive approach to foreign policy, earning a controversial reputation among many foreign allies and fellow diplomats.
Pompeo pushed for a stronger NATO — meaning that he hopes to strengthen the political and military alliance of European and North American countries — as well as increased military presence in Russia, along with criticisms of China’s aggressions towards Taiwan. He supported Trump’s attempts to denuclearize North Korea and attended three summits with the country’s leaders.
A West Point and Harvard Law graduate, Pompeo has represented Kansas in the House before joining the Trump administration. Although he indicated early interest in running in the 2024 presidential election, in April Pompeo announced he would not enter the race.
Notably, Young Americans for Freedom — a conservative student group — also hosted Mike Pence spring 2022. The event made national headlines as many student groups protested Pence’s invitation due to his conservative policies, igniting a debate over free speech. The Cavalier Daily released an editorial condemning the decision to bring Pence to Grounds which drew national attention and criticism.
Registration for the Pompeo event is free, but attendees must provide their date of birth and address for security purposes, according to the site.
