While many University students have already packed their bags for the upcoming Thanksgiving break, those who remain on Grounds for the holiday will be navigating a limited schedule of University services and resources during the academic break. Closures vary by facility, but are outlined below and on the Student Affairs website.
The University will be in Thanksgiving recess Wednesday through Sunday. During that time, there will be no classes and academic offices will be closed. While the break officially begins Wednesday, many students opt to leave early and miss classes Monday and Tuesday. It is up to professor discretion to cancel or move classes to Zoom in the days immediately preceding break.
University dining halls will be running on a limited holiday schedule Tuesday and Sunday, with no dining hall services available Wednesday through Saturday. Both Observatory Hill Dining Hall and The Fresh Food Co. at Newcomb Hall will be closed from Wednesday to Saturday. Both are providing breakfast Tuesday and dinner Sunday, but only Observatory Hill offering dinner Tuesday and brunch Sunday. Runk will be closed following lunch Tuesday until breakfast next Monday.
All other dining rooms will be closed from Wednesday to Sunday, with only certain Observatory Hill to-go options available Friday and Saturday. The closures pose potential issues for first-year students, as they are required to have a meal plan. Other students remaining on Grounds may lack kitchen facilities — such as those living on the Lawn or the Range — depending on their housing arrangements.
The University Transit service will also be operating on a limited holiday schedule beginning Tuesday, with no service Thursday through Sunday. Normal Academic and Commuter services will be operating Tuesday, but there will be no Night Pilot service, which usually runs nightly 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.. Only the Redline and Blueline will be providing service Wednesday. UTS on Demand — a service that will take students directly to their requested stop free of charge — will be unavailable Wednesday through Sunday.
All mailrooms will be closed Wednesday through Sunday and operate under normal hours Monday and Tuesday. Newcomb Hall and 1515 will close 5 p.m. Tuesday and re-open noon Saturday. Student Health and Wellness will be closed to students Wednesday through Sunday. While all Residential Colleges and Dorms are open for the holiday, Housing and Residential Life will be closed Wednesday through Sunday.
All University libraries will be closed Wednesday through Saturday, with hours Tuesday and Sunday varying by facility. Clemons Library will close 8 p.m. Tuesday and reopen 10 a.m. Sunday. The Charles L. Brown Science & Engineering Library will close 6 p.m. Tuesday and reopens 10 a.m. Sunday.
All Fitness facilities will be closed Wednesday through Saturday. The Aquatic & Fitness Center will close early 9 p.m. Monday and re-open for normal hours Sunday. North Grounds Recreation Center will be closed Monday through Saturday, Memorial Gym will be closed Wednesday through Sunday and Slaughter Recreation Center will be closed Wednesday through Saturday.
Despite the challenges that come with the holiday closures, University, student and local organizations are partnering to provide resources for those remaining on Grounds. U.Va. Community Food Pantry and Student Council arranged 200 free meal kits for students who are remaining on Grounds for Thanksgiving. The meal kits are assembled using donations from the Blue Ridge area food bank, Trader Joes and Harris Teeter.
Students who pre-ordered kits received them last Sunday, and there are unreserved meal kits available until Tuesday in the Student Activities Center on the first floor of Newcomb Hall. The Lorna Sundberg International Center is also offering its annual Thanksgiving Meal Match, where International Students are paired with local families for their Thanksgiving meals.
All University facilities and services will resume normal operating hours Nov. 27.
