The Cavalier Daily elected editors for its upcoming 135th term this Saturday, choosing third-year College student Nathan Onibudo as its next editor-in-chief in a contested election.
Onibudo joined The Cavalier Daily as an opinion staffer during his first year at the University. He has since served as a member of the paper’s editorial board and currently works on the Managing Board as the executive editor.
Onibudo succeeds fourth-year College student Ava MacBlane in the editor-in-chief role. The paper’s new term begins Jan. 17, the first day of classes in the spring semester.
Through ongoing collaboration with the Jefferson Consulting Group and the Karsh Institute of Democracy, Onibudo hopes to continue working towards a structure to pay staff writers. Onibudo also said he hopes to increase training for incoming editors and enhance the paper’s digital presence.
“I’m so grateful that my friends and colleagues on The Cavalier Daily have entrusted me with this honor,” Onibudo said. “I hope to be able to give back to this newspaper just as much as it has given to me.”
Third-year College student Grace Thrush was elected as the paper’s managing editor in a contested election.
Second-year College student Naima Sawaya was selected as executive editor in a contested election.
Third-year College student Honor Wood, who currently serves as assistant operations manager, was selected as operations manager in a contested election.
Third-year Commerce student Charlie Healy was re-elected as chief financial officer in an uncontested election.
The Cavalier Daily also held elections for Junior Board positions, which include literary editors, operations staffers such as social media managers and advertising and finance managers.
Second-year College student Hailey Chung was selected to serve as assistant managing editor in a contested election.
Second-year College Blaine Hutchens will serve as assistant literary editor after being selected in a contested election.
Second-year College student Olivia Winesett was elected as assistant operations manager following a contested election. Winesett currently serves as video editor.
Second-year College students Thomas Baxter and Finn Trainer were elected news editors in a contested election.
Sports editors for the upcoming term, third-year College student Ben Istvan and second-year College student Xander Tilock, were elected in a contested election.
Third-year College students Delores Cyrus and Delaney Hammond were selected as arts and entertainment editors in a contested election.
Second-year College students Mia Tan and Kate Johnson will serve as life editors.
Opinion editors, third-year College student Dan Freed and second-year College student Songhan Pang, were selected in a contested election.
Wardah Kamran will serve as humor editor.
Sarah Elder was selected as cartoon editor.
Second-year College student Wilson Simmons was re-elected as finance manager in a contested election.
First-year College student Will Peres was selected as advertising manager.
Current photo editor and third-year College student Adaire Burnsed was re-elected to the position. Third-year Commerce student Leon Arceo will join her as photo editor.
Third-year College student Lexie Gagnon was re-elected as design editor, along with Sarah St. John and second-year College student Mariam Seshan, in a contested election.
Huijing Zhu was selected as Chinese translation editor in a contested election.
Current social media manager and third-year Education student Covonna Bynum was re-elected to the position alongside first-year College student Bianca Blancaflor.
Third-year College student Avery Donmoyer, current news editor, will serve as focus editor, a new position which establish The Cavalier Daily’s first dedicated investigative desk.
