Therefore, with a sense of great urgency and deep concern, we the undersigned join the Faculty Senate and the General Faculty Council in expressing no confidence in the Board of Visitors.

Editor’s Note: This letter was sent via email to the Board of Visitors Aug. 6 before it was published as a guest piece in The Cavalier Daily. There are 141 University-affiliated signatories.

We are retired faculty who have dedicated our careers to the University. We have

developed a deep understanding of the institution, its history and its values. We have every good wish for its future, which recent events have gravely darkened.

Since the forced resignation of University President James Ryan, actions by the Board of Visitors and its leadership have engendered mistrust of their fiduciary commitments and ability to act in the best interests of the University in protecting our institutional independence, shared governance and academic freedom. Transparency is the foundation of trust, and without trust, the University community will not be able to unite and move forward towards the bright future it deserves.

We note, in particular, the continued lack of transparency about:

  1. The events that led up to Ryan’s resignation
  2. The process for the selection of an interim president
  3. The negotiations that are taking place with the Department of Justice that will have a profound impact on the teaching, research and scholarly work of the University

Mistrust in the Board and its leadership was further generated by the appointment of a search

committee for the future president without allowing faculty, most importantly, to suggest names

for consideration that would effectively represent their interests and concerns.

Therefore, with a sense of great urgency and deep concern, we the undersigned join the

Faculty Senate and the General Faculty Council in expressing no confidence in the Board of Visitors.
