Former graduate wide receiver Jahmal Edrine was arrested and taken into custody Thursday after being indicted by an Albemarle county grand jury on one count of rape and one count of abduction. He is being held without bond at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.

The 22-year-old was subject to investigation beginning Aug. 25, following a report to the Albemarle County Police Department by an unnamed victim who reported having been sexually assaulted by Edrine one day prior. It is not known whether the reported incident occurred on Grounds, or if the victim was a student of the University.

It is unclear whether the football program or Virginia Athletics were aware of the investigation, which began five days before the first game of this past season Aug. 30.

Edrine appeared in all 14 games of the 2025-26 season after transferring from Purdue. He recorded 46 catches for 564 yards, with one touchdown.

According to Wahoos247 reporter Jacquie Francuilli, Brian Coy, Associate Vice President for Communications and Chief Communications Officer, released a statement on the matter Thursday evening.

“The University is aware of this matter. While the University is prohibited by federal student privacy law from commenting on specific cases, we can confirm that this individual is not currently enrolled at the University,” Coy wrote. “Albemarle County Police are continuing their investigation into this matter, and the University will cooperate fully with that investigation.”

The University's 2025-26 Student Athlete Handbook states that student-athletes are required to notify their head coach within 24 hours of an arrest, and to notify the Dean of Students within 72 hours.

Edrine is no longer listed as a member of the 2026-27 Virginia football roster, despite previously announcing he would return to the program for next season. According to Coy, Edrine is not currently enrolled as a student, and it is unclear when exactly he unenrolled from the University.

Athletic Director Carla Williams and Coach Tony Elliott have not made a statement regarding Edrine’s indictment at the time of publication. The Cavalier Daily reached out to Athletic Communications and the University Judiciary Committee for comment. Athletic Communications and UJC did not respond to requests for comment at the time of publication.
