Following a series of severe weather alerts for Monday, the University canceled in-person classes after 11 a.m., according to an email from Chief Operating Officer Jennifer Davis.
Davis asked that classes scheduled to conclude after 11 a.m. end early, and recommended that professors shift later classes online if possible. Non-essential personnel should leave Grounds by 11 a.m., she wrote.
Students, faculty and staff can monitor academic operations online, although Davis said that University officials will continue to monitor weather conditions and provide updates. Some U.Va. Health operations are also impacted, although operations vary across clinics and departments.
The decision to cancel classes comes as much of the East Coast is under severe weather alerts Monday, with wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour expected. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has also issued a tornado watch for a number of East Coast states through 7 p.m. Monday.
The Washington Post reported that storm risks in mid-Atlantic states will likely peak between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Monday, with a first round bringing more scattered storms.
University Police shared a post on Instagram Sunday which advised community members on how to seek shelter during a potential tornado, urging that individuals seek out basements or interior rooms in their homes or buildings.
Jared Lathrop, senior communications manager for the University Department of Safety and Security, said in an email to The Cavalier Daily that community members should remain indoors throughout the storm and follow along with any additional University updates and alerts.
