The University released regular decision application decisions for the Class of 2030 Friday, completing its final admissions cycle and bringing total offers of admission across all cycles to 10,287 students from an applicant pool of 82,118. Decisions for the early decision and early application cycles were released Dec. 12 and Jan. 30, respectively.
The regular decision application is a non-binding admission option in which students submit applications by Jan. 5. This year, the University received 26,767 regular decision applications, compared to 17,568 last year — a 52.4 percent increase in applications.
Of those 26,767 regular decision applicants, 1,895 were offered admission. Virginia residents accounted for 6,377 of applicants, receiving 472 offers of admission — a 7.4 percent acceptance rate — while 1,423 offers of admission were extended to out-of-state applications from a pool of 20,390 — a 6.97 percent acceptance rate.
According to data from the University’s admissions blog, regular decision offer rates have tightened over recent years. Virginia regular decision acceptance rates stood at 16 percent in the 2022-23 cycle, dropped to 15 percent in 2023-24 cycle, fell further to 11 percent in 2024-25 and continued declining this cycle. Out-of-state regular decision rates show a similar trend, moving from 12 percent in 2022-23 to 11 percent in 2023-24, 9 percent in 2024-25 and maintaining that downward trend this cycle.
The total applicant pool across all cycles — early decision, early action and regular decision — reached 82,118 this year, a 27.4 percent increase from last year. Of those, 19,964 were Virginia residents and 62,154 were out-of-state applicants. Virginia residents received 4,317 total offers of admission, reflecting a 22 percent offer rate, while out-of-state applicants received 5,970 offers — a 10 percent offer rate. Last year’s in-state offer rate was 23 percent, and the out-of-state offer rate was 12.5 percent.
Deferred applicants from the early action cycle were also reviewed during the regular decision round. Of the 8,480 students deferred to regular decision, 394 received offers of admission in the final cycle. The University offered 8,624 students a place on the waitlist and students on the waitlist can expect a decision after May 1.
As outlined by the Virginia state legislature, the University must maintain a two-thirds majority of Virginia residents in the student population. As a result, Virginia residents see higher offer rates than those applying from out of state.
The surge in applications this year was particularly pronounced in the regular decision cycle. In the 2023-24 cycle, total regular decision applications stood at 16,866, and rose slightly to 17,568 in the 2024-25 cycle — an increase of 4.16 percent. This year’s jump to 26,767 represents an acceleration that mirrors the broader trend seen in the other application cycles such as the early action cycle, where out-of-state applications rose by 43.7 percent. The regular decision out-of-state pool alone grew from 14,049 to 20,390 applicants, a 45.1 percent increase.
Historically, the University has seen consistent growth in its total applicant pool. In the 2022-23 cycle, total applications stood at 56,439. That number climbed to 58,995 in 2023-24 and to 64,463 in 2024-25. This year’s total of 82,118 represents the largest single-year jump in the last five years, largely due to the 45.13 percent increase in out-of-state applications for the regular decision application cycle. In-state applications have grown comparatively steadily, with an average growth of 9.62 percent over the past four application cycles.
Students admitted through the early action and regular decision cycles may accept their offers by submitting a non-refundable deposit by May 1.
