Reevaluating Representation of Indigenous People at U.Va.

Monday, Oct. 12 is Indigenous Peoples Day in Virginia. Charlottesville and much of the University sits on land originally stewarded by the Monacan Nation. Last month, the University’s Board of Visitors voted to remove a statue of George Rogers Clark. Indigenous activists have criticized the statue for years for its depiction Clark on horseback with three Native Americans cowering below him. Activists are now calling on the University to acknowledge and honor tribal leaders’ suggestions for rededicating the land.
