My father and I used to stand in the kitchen and talk after he got home from work -- he having the customary after-work cocktail while I paced restlessly. Because we saw each other only a few hours a day during the week, he would take the opportunity to impart whatever advice he had floating around his mind, things ranging from the merits of law school to the persisting value of Springsteen records. Last night, the Associated Press reported Democrat Jim Webb appeared to unseat incumbent Republican Sen. George Allen in Tuesday's midterm elections, giving Democrats both chambers of Congress. Webb has begun to assemble a Senate transition committee while Allen has yet to announce whether he will concede or request a recount.

Students were stunned last night as they reacted to the reported murder of Curry School Graduate student, Elizabeth Hafter. Last night a man believed to be William Ashby, who was last seen driving Hafter's car, was killed in a shootout with police officers in St. Augustine, Fla.

Dean of African-American Affairs M. Rick Turner has been put on administrative leave after signing a pretrial diversion agreement with federal prosecutors. According to the agreement, Turner acknowledged that last July, during a Drug Enforcement Administration investigation, he misrepresented his knowledge of the activities of a "known drug dealer." Turner signed the agreement, requiring him to serve a year-long probationary period and truthfully testify in court proceedings, in exchange for not being prosecuted and the charges being dropped at the conclusion of his cooperation.

At the conclusion of Sunday's open Honor trial, third-year Engineering student Steve Gilday was found not guilty of cheating but guilty of lying in regard to the legitimacy of a test he had submitted for a re-grade. The honor case was initiated against Gilday late last semester by his BIOL 310 professor, Laura Galloway.

The dismissal of Dena Bowers from her position as a senior recruiter with the University's Department of Human Resources has been surrounded in controversy, as Bowers' supporters assert she was denied due process and wrongfully fired, while the University claims that every dismissal procedure was properly followed. Bowers and her supporters will be moving forward with an employee grievance procedure, according to Staff Union President Jan Cornell.
