Working as a sports columnist for the Cavalier Daily is an interesting niche. That each column is adorned with a small, full-color headshot has created more than a few awkward social interactions. I regularly receive a lot of confused looks from strangers -- some that think they might recognize me (though the red hair helps) and some that wonder if I've ever seen a sporting event in my life. Those are the ones who actually read my work.

Let's play a word association game: What comes to mind when I say the words inseparable, hysterical, fun-loving and happy? No, don't worry, you're not mistakenly reading another Life column about a budding relationship. Instead, those are the words senior defender Elizabeth Pinney uses to describe the camaraderie of her women's lacrosse teammates.

After seeing countless coming attractions for Fever Pitch, I was skeptical about the concept of a romantic comedy in which a couple's burgeoning relationship is hindered by the man's insatiable passion for the Red Sox. I had mixed feelings about seeing it. On one hand, you can understand my reluctance -- such a scenario rings a little too close to home for a guy like me. However, I felt almost obliged to go see this movie because the Sox are so central to the plot. Thankfully, tableau invited me to review the movie, thus giving me the perfect excuse to go guilt-free.

Where have you gone, Sergei Samsonov? In what is typically a boon sports fortnight -- don't worry, I said "sports fortnight," not "beard fortnight" -- a key component is missing this spring: the NHL playoffs. We are concluding a two-week stretch in which we have seen the men's and women's Final Fours, baseball's Opening Day and the Masters. Closer to home, we were even treated to the University's spring sports fest last weekend.

SOMEWHERE ON I-70, Ill. -- As I traverse the width of Illinois for the third time in as many days, shuttling back and forth between the men's and women's Final Fours in St. Louis and Indianapolis, respectively, I grow increasingly road weary from having cruised monotonous Midwestern highways the last nine days. The road has taken its toll physically, but I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.

With college athletes only on campus for four or five years, fans are accustomed to their team's uniforms being filled by a revolving door of names and faces. In the case of the Virginia men's basketball program, that door has been revolving a bit faster than normal, as seven scholarship players transferred to new schools during Pete Gillen's tenure alone.

I had never seen such optimism from Virginia basketball players and fans as I did Sunday evening. I must admit, it was a little unsettling and a lot unexpected to watch the Cavaliers greet the NCAA tournament selection show so enthusiastically. But, much to my surprise, I saw and heard nothing but loud cheering and enthusiastic applause as I sat alongside the team at BW3's watching as the tournament bracket was announced on ESPN.

Ever wonder what happens when a full-bearded, rhythm-deficient, dance-adverse ogre tries to move in step with a squad of highly-trained and very lovely dancers? Well, that was more or less the scene Tuesday night, as I heeded an invitation from senior co-captain Sarah Simnowitz to participate in the dance team's final practice of the season. For someone whose previous dance experience consists of one hopelessly awkward Friday evening in ninth grade, let's all take a moment to be thankful that there were no reported injuries.

Attention all gentlemen: Do you find yourself missing football season uncontrollably? Feeling a bit whipped after taking your sweetheart out on Valentine's Day? Needing to reassert your manliness?

With the weather expected to be upper 60s and sunny today, it's time to do some spring cleaning and empty out the file of random sports stories...

By all counts Sunday night's Super Bowl lived up to all its hype as a true American holiday. It was an unbelievable display of glitz, glamour and spectacle, and the game was even exciting too. I walked away from the Super Bowl with two principle observations: The Patriots fully deserve their dynasty hype and the infusion of forced patriotism into sports seems to know no end. Nearly every sports writer in the country has already attacked that first topic, so I am going to focus on the latter.

Virginia tight end Heath Miller and outside linebacker Darryl Blackstock, both three-year starters, announced they would forego their senior seasons of eligibility and enter the 2005 NFL Draft. Blackstock, a second team All-ACC selection, led the Cavaliers in sacks each of the past three seasons.

The No. 18 Virginia Cavaliers (8-3, 5-3 ACC) officially learned the identity of their bowl opponent yesterday afternoon, and it will be Fresno State, which sports an identical 8-3 record. The MPC Computers Bowl on Dec. 27 will be the first all-time meeting between the two schools.

The Virginia-Virginia Tech rivalry has always been hotly contested, but this year's edition comes with a twist: A conference championship is on the line.

The Cavaliers can still win the ACC, or at least a share of it. Innumerable scenarios still exist for the end of the season, but the best case for Virginia football includes a tie with Florida State atop the conference. The two would then be declared co-champions, and even though FSU beat the Cavaliers in the regular season, Virginia would have a slim chance to advance to a BCS bowl depending on the final national rankings.

It's smashmouth football, with a twist. Virginia's ground game, which ranks first in the ACC and sixth nationally, relies heavily on pulling linemen instead of more traditional straight-ahead blocking.

Virginia's defense pitched its second shutout of the season, holding Maryland to just seven first downs and 51 rushing yards as the No. 12 Cavaliers (7-1, 4-1 ACC) knocked off Maryland (4-5, 2-4), 16-0, before a record crowd at Scott Stadium.

After every cursed collapse, wretched setback and poor managerial decision, and after every time that I almost lost faith, my brother would remind me how much sweeter victory would taste having been through those trying times.

While most football teams rely heavily on the pass-catching ability and game-breaking speed of their wide receivers, those skills seem to be superfluous requirements to play the position for the Cavaliers.
