At its 11th annual event, the University’s chapter of Relay for Life surpassed records from all previous years, bringing in more than $138,000. More than 1,000 students and community members gathered in Memorial Gymnasium Friday for the year-long campaign’s culminating event, a 12-hour, non-stop walk-a-thon designed to raise funds and awareness for cancer and cancer research.

The University’s Up to Us team, which led a campaign aimed at raising awareness about the national debt, was awarded first place in the six-week national Up-to-Us competition this weekend. The five-person group traveled to St. Louis Saturday for the Clinton Global Initiative Conference where former President Bill Clinton and other prominent leaders presented them with a $10,000 award.

Instead of hiring a new Chief Financial Officer to fill the vacant position, the University restructured Executive Vice President Patrick Hogan’s office to include those responsibilities. The restructuring, announced last week, effective Monday, seeks to promote the streamlining goals laid out by University President Teresa Sullivan.

Graduate Arts & Sciences student Adam Lees has announced he is intending to run for a seat on the Charlottesville City Council this November to improve the University’s relationship with the community and better represent students in City Hall.

University Army Cadet Aimee Moores, a member of the University’s Reserve Officers Training Corps program and a fourth-year College student, was awarded the 2013 General George C. Marshall Award last week. The award recognizes one cadet in each battalion every year, and is based on leadership, grade-point average and physical fitness.

The Board of Visitors Special Committee on Strategic Planning met Friday to outline its proposals for future University initiatives. Much of the meeting consisted of a presentation by University President Teresa Sullivan’s steering committee, which presented findings on efficiency, student life, synergy and technology initiatives, with a focus on maintaining or establishing national leadership in those domains.
